To save you thinking time, here\u2019s a list with the above chord-progression for the most common keys:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In C-major:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0C &#8211; Dm\/C &#8211; Em\/C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>In G-major:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0G &#8211; Am\/G &#8211; Bm\/G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>In D-major:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0D &#8211; Em\/D &#8211; F#m\/D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>In F-major:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0F &#8211; Gm\/F &#8211; Am\/F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>In Bb-major:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bb &#8211; Cm\/Bb &#8211; Dm\/Bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b> Extend your chords<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>?<\/b><b>Tip \u2192 Video minute 0:09<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you look closely at my fingers in the video, you will see, that I am doubling the F-bass note with the pinky of my right hand. I play the F on top of each of the chords. I often compare the process of composing with cooking. Often a tiny bit of salt or chilly adds magnificently to the overall flavour, whereas a huge portion of these ingredients may taste very off-putting. It is the same with creating a harmonic journey. So I very consciously used some \u201csalt\u201d in the intro to the Heal the World &#8211; arrangement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u2018salt\u2019 inside the chords of the intro is undoubtedly the Am with an added F on top. In the score below and indicated in blue, you see the reason: The E and the F on top of the Am\/F chord add friction. Both notes played<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> together form the interval of a minor second, known as an interval of tension. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In harmonic context however, this friction is exactly what is making the <a href=\"\/blog\/chord-progressions-on-piano\/\">chord progression<\/a> sound so beautiful. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The experts among you may argue, that this chord could be easier interpreted as an F major 7th chord, and I\u2019d agree, however the concept of friction remains the same.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1195 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-7.jpg 642w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-7-300x104.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>?Remember: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension &amp; Release are the most fundamental drivers for harmonic progression in western music. It is the harmonic friction that creates this tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Rhythmetize your chords <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>?<\/b><b>Tip:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rhythmic element of your intro is really important to make it sound interesting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far you may have played the chord tones without much rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One easy technique to get more rhythm and groove going in your playing is to <\/span><b>arpeggiate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the chord you play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Arpeggio means that the chord tones are played in succession.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing chord tones arpeggiated (also called melodically) is actually easier than playing them simultaneously (also called harmonically), because you play one finger at a time as opposed to all of them at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here you see the notation of a chord arpeggio of the intro chords. The notes are played in succession as quarter notes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even simple, this arpeggio already adds a rhythmic element to the intro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1194 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-8.jpg\" alt=\"chord arpeggio of the intro chords\" width=\"636\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-8.jpg 636w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-8-300x68.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>?<\/b><b>Tip:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play the arpeggiated chords on the piano.<\/span> <b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>IMPORTANT: Use the sustain pedal or every arpeggiated chord as indicated by the blue lines.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1193 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-9.jpg\" alt=\"chord arpeggio of the intro chords with sustain pedal\" width=\"643\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-9.jpg 643w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Heal-9-300x76.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surely arpeggios can rhythmically be more complex\u2026 the sky&#8217;s the limit. However, start out with a simple rhythmic pattern and apply it to every chord. Don\u2019t use a different rhythmic pattern for each different chord as it may sound confusing and off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>?<\/b><b>Tip:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Become creative with the order of notes in the arpeggio. Simply change the order of chord tones.
