Between work, family, and social life, it can be tough to find consistent practice time. Some weeks, I manage to play daily, while others, I barely get to touch the keys. But I\u2019ve realized that the key to progress is setting goals that I can actually stick to.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mastering_all_12_major_scales\"><\/span><b>Mastering all 12 major scales<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When you play, never mind who listens to you.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Robert Schumann<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my main goals is to learn all 12 major scales by the end of the year. Since scales are <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/melody-in-music\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the foundation of melodies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mastering them helps me play more fluently and confidently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To keep things manageable, I\u2019m focusing on one scale per month. That gives me enough time to get comfortable with the finger patterns, improve my speed, and incorporate them into my playing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Learning_major_and_minor_triads_in_every_key\"><\/span><b>Learning major and minor triads in every key<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since I\u2019m already working on scales, I want to go a step further and learn the major and minor triads in all 12 keys. Chords are the building blocks of music, and knowing them well helps me understand how songs are structured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By practicing all seven triads in each key, I\u2019ll be able to play more freely and experiment with <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/harmony-in-music\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different harmonies.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strengthening_my_rhythm_skills\"><\/span><b>Strengthening my rhythm skills<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/rhythm-in-music\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhythm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is just as important as melody and harmony, so I\u2019m making it a priority this year. I\u2019ve often found myself struggling with tricky rhythms, so I\u2019m setting a structured plan to improve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first few months, I\u2019m focusing on recognizing and counting basic note values like whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes. Then, I\u2019ll work on different <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/time-signatures-explained\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time signatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like 4\/4, 3\/4, and 6\/8. By the end of the year, I hope to have a much stronger sense of timing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Learning_one_new_song_each_month\"><\/span><b>Learning one new song each month<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love the idea of expanding my repertoire, so I\u2019ve set a goal to learn one new song every month.
