Who can use Skoove? Can children learn with Skoove?

Skoove is best suited for adults and teenagers (ages 12+) as it uses cutting-edge computer technology and offers a wide range of genres and courses to learn the piano.

However, we know younger kids enjoy learning and having fun with Skoove, and we recommend they do the lessons together with an adult for extra guidance.

I don’t have a keyboard or piano. Can I use Skoove?

Skoove is designed to teach you how to play piano, so you can’t really use the app without a keyboard or piano. Please see below for our keyboard recommendations.

I don’t have a keyboard. Which keyboard should I buy?

Here are some recommendations for you

  • ~$/€150: Casio CTK3200 with 61 touch sensitive keys is a great choice for beginners. Avoid low cost/no-name brands. We find that they frequently lose MIDI connection.
  • ~$/€350: Casio WK6600 Set with 76 keys. You'll be able to play a wider range of songs (bundle it with a stand).
  • ~$/€500: Yamaha P35 full-size with 88 weighted keys; no song is too varied to play on this.

All of these can connect to Skoove with a USB cable (sometimes not included). Many low and mid-level keyboards are sold without a power adapter or keyboard stand. Double-check that at least a power cord is included (or buy one separately) so you won't have to constantly swap out batteries.

Are used/second-hand keyboards a good alternative?

Yes, you can connect most old keyboards to Skoove without any trouble.

How do I connect my keyboard to my PC/Mac?

Keyboards usually come with either a USB or MIDI port. Check the back or underneath and look for something like this:

MIDI plugin USB plugin

If you've got both, USB is usually easier to work with. Once everything is connected, your keyboard should show up in Skoove. Check the answers below in case you need help with the USB cable or MIDI cable.

If your keyboard isn't showing up in Skoove, check your keyboard manufacturer's website to see if a driver is available. Try installing it if you can find one.

Don't have either type? If your keyboard only has a headphone jack (or nothing at all), that means it can't send the MIDI data Skoove requires. Unfortunately, the only real solution in that case is to try a different keyboard or play without the feedback features. The good news is that all but the lowest-end keyboards usually have at least one of these ports.

What if Skoove doesn’t recognize my keyboard?

We recommend you check for the latest downloads, drivers, and updates for your keyboard’s brand. Search the web for "(type your brand and model name), driver, download”. If this doesn’t work, try the brand’s website and search their help, support, knowledge base, and/or download sections.

Do you recommend a specific MIDI interface?

Prodipe MIDI USB

Prodipe

Creative EMU MIDI USB

USB-to-MIDI

These two are the most compatible and affordable USB-to-MIDI adapters we've found. They work with everything, don't require drivers, and cost only about $/€20.

Make sure that you wire the MIDI cables correctly: The In cable goes to your keyboard's MIDI Out port.

Do not buy cheap or generic MIDI adapters, as incompatible and flakey adapters can cause problems. Do not buy this adapter in particular

Do all USB cables work?

Yes, you may already have this cable if you have a printer or scanner. The standard A-to-B USB 2.0 cable is easy to find and is only a few dollars/euros.

Which sound output should I use for the keyboard?

For keyboards with built-in speakers, we recommend you use those.

If your keyboard doesn't have speakers, you can also use the speakers of your computer. Please select “I use a keyboard controller” on the sound settings page.

Will the PC/Mac speakers be loud enough?

Most PC/Mac speakers will work well (provided you don’t turn up the volume on your keyboard too high). If you prefer, you can connect the PC/Mac to your hifi system.

How can I use Skoove with headphones?

Simply plug your headphones into the sound output from the PC/MAC and select “I use headphones” on the keyboard or sound settings. Turn down the volume of your e-piano if necessary.
