The Circle of Fifths, explained without the jargon

The Circle of Fifths is a diagram that arranges all 12 musical keys in a clock-like pattern. Every key you move clockwise is a perfect fifth higher than the last one — that's where the name comes from. The same circle, read counter-clockwise, gives you perfect fourths.

That sounds abstract. Here's what it actually does for you: it tells you, at a glance, which chords belong to which key, which keys are easy to move between, and why some chord changes sound "right" while others sound like a stumble. It's the single most useful diagram in Western music theory, and the tool above lets you click any key to hear it.

Why the Circle exists

Western music is built on twelve different pitches per octave — the white and black keys of a piano. Songs are written in keys: a starting note plus the seven notes that sound natural when played alongside it. Each key has its own set of diatonic chords, and each key has a closest neighbour just one step of difference away.

The Circle organises all 12 keys so that neighbours on the diagram are also musically closest. C major and G major sit next to each other on the Circle, and they sound related because their scales share six of seven notes. C major and F♯ major sit on opposite sides, and they sound distant because their scales only share one.

How to read the diagram

Three things to know before clicking anywhere:

  • The outer ring is the 12 major keys. C is at the top.
  • The inner ring is the 12 minor keys. Each minor key sits below its relative major — the key it shares all its notes with.
  • The centre tells you the key signature of whichever key you've selected. C major has zero sharps or flats; F♯ major has six sharps; F major has one flat.

When you click a major key, four things happen visually: that wedge fills with Skoove green, the wedge directly clockwise becomes the V chord, the wedge directly counterclockwise becomes the IV chord, and the inner-ring wedge at the same position becomes the vi chord — the relative minor.

Practical uses — what it actually unlocks

Songwriters use the Circle to find chord progressions. Hit a chord, check its neighbours, write a progression that pulls between them. That's how "I – V – vi – IV" (the so-called axis of awesome) works: every chord lives within one or two steps of the others on the Circle, which is why it sounds so cohesive.

Performers use it for transposition. If you know a song is in C and your singer wants it in G, the chords don't change in their relative positions — every chord just shifts one wedge clockwise on the Circle. C major's I is now G major's I, F major (the IV in C) is now C major (the IV in G), and so on.

Improvisers use it for modulation. If you want to surprise the listener but still sound natural, modulate to a key one step away — the V or the IV. If you want to take them somewhere genuinely unexpected, modulate two or three steps away. Each step on the Circle is one note's difference in the scale.

Common progressions and why they work

The Circle is also a sanity-check for chord progressions. If your progression jumps around opposite sides of the Circle, it'll probably sound disjointed. If it stays within three or four adjacent wedges, it'll sound cohesive without being boring.

Here are three progressions you can play with above:

  • I – V – vi – IV — the most-used progression in pop music. In C major: C, G, Am, F. Every chord is within one step on the Circle (G is clockwise from C; F is counterclockwise; Am is directly inside).
  • ii – V – I — the cornerstone of jazz harmony. In C major: Dm7, G7, Cmaj7. The Dm is the minor at position 11; G is the major at position 1; C is the major at position 0. The whole progression walks counterclockwise by fifths back to the home key.
  • i – VII – VI – V (Andalusian) — descends down the minor scale, common in flamenco and dramatic film scores. In A minor: Am, G, F, E.

Major and minor: same wedge, different mood

A common confusion: if A minor has the same notes as C major, why do they sound so different? The answer is which note is the "home" note. C major treats C as home and resolves to it. A minor treats A as home and resolves to A. Same seven notes; different tonal centre; completely different emotional landscape.

Common questions

Why is C at the top of the Circle?
Tradition — C major has no sharps or flats, so it's the "simplest" key in standard notation. Some diagrams put A minor at the top instead, but the structure is identical either way.
Why are some keys spelled with sharps and others with flats?
Each key has a "correct" spelling that minimises accidentals on the staff. G major uses 1 sharp (F♯), so we write it with sharps. F major uses 1 flat (B♭), so we write it with flats. The six o'clock position can be spelled as F♯ (6 sharps) or G♭ (6 flats) — both are correct, but musicians usually pick whichever is more familiar in the genre.
What's a perfect fifth?
A perfect fifth is the interval between a note and the note seven semitones above it. C to G is a perfect fifth. G to D is a perfect fifth. That's why the Circle keeps going: every step is the same interval.
Do I have to memorise the whole Circle?
Not at all. Most musicians end up knowing the first 4-5 keys on each side cold (C, G, D, A, E plus F, B♭, E♭) because those are the most common keys for pop, folk, and rock. The rest you learn when a song demands it.
Why don't more apps teach the Circle of Fifths?
Most apps focus on gameplay loops — points, streaks, levels. Theory like the Circle is a conceptual tool, not a game mechanic, so it tends to get skipped. Skoove's positioning is structured learning, so the Circle is treated as foundational.
