Where Am7 shows up

Am7 is built on A minor, the relative minor of C major. The key of A minor has no sharps or flats. Am7 works as the ii7 in G and the iii7 in F, the roles that put it at the front of jazz and soul progressions.

Jazz players know it as the start of Am7–D7–Gmaj7, the ii–V–I in G major.

Common questions

What notes are in the A minor 7th chord?

The A minor 7th chord is made up of A, C, E, G. All white keys: start on A, skip a key to C, skip another to E, and the shape is under your hand.

What fingers should I use to play Am7 on piano?

In root position, the standard fingering is 1-2-3-5 in the right hand and 5-3-2-1 in the left hand (1 = thumb, 5 = little finger). A, C, E, G are all white keys; find A between the second and third of the three black keys, and the rest of the shape follows.

What are the seventh chords in the key of A minor?

When should I play Am7 instead of A minor?

Am7 is the A minor triad with G added on top, so the two swap freely. The seventh takes the edge off the minor sound; use the plain triad when you want the sadness undiluted.
