Where Bb7 shows up

Bb7 is the dominant seventh of Eb major. When a song in Eb wants a strong arrival, Bb7 is the chord that comes right before it, and its Ab is the note leaning hardest.

Hear it drive a 12-bar blues in Bb: Bb7–Eb7–F7.

Common questions

What notes are in the Bb dominant 7th chord?

The Bb dominant 7th chord is made up of Bb, D, F, Ab. Bb is the black key between A and B, and starting the chord there shifts the whole hand slightly back on the keyboard.

What fingers should I use to play Bb7 on piano?

In root position, the standard fingering is 1-2-3-5 in the right hand and 5-3-2-1 in the left hand (1 = thumb, 5 = little finger). Bb and Ab keep the hand up on the black keys, with D and F in between, so let the fingers sit deep in the cluster for a secure reach.

Is Bb dominant 7th the same as A#?

Yes, the keys you press are identical and the sound is the same. This is known as enharmonic equivalents. Sheet music in flat keys writes Bb dominant 7th, while sharp-key contexts spell the same sound A#. In print and in search, Bb dominant 7th is by far the more common of the two.

What's the difference between Bb7 and Bbmaj7?

Bb7 has a minor 7th on top, Ab, which makes it sound restless and ready to resolve. Bbmaj7 raises that note a half step, which sounds settled and warm instead. Same Bb–D–F triad underneath, one note apart, very different jobs.
