Where Cm shows up

C minor is the relative minor of Eb major: the C minor scale is built from the same notes as the Eb major scale. The chord also works as the ii in Bb and the iii in Ab, two roles that keep it busy in pop and jazz progressions alike. The key of C minor has three flats.

Its most famous setting is the Cm–Ab–Eb–Bb loop, the minor-led progression behind countless pop hits.

Common questions

What notes are in the C minor chord?

The C minor chord is made up of C, Eb, G. Eb, the black key between D and E, is the only raised note in the shape; C and G stay white.

What fingers should I use to play Cm on piano?

In root position, the standard fingering is 1-3-5 in the right hand and 5-3-1 in the left hand (1 = thumb, 5 = little finger). Cm puts finger 3 on Eb, the chord's only black key.

What are the notes in the C natural minor scale?

The C natural minor scale is C – D – Eb – F – G – Ab – Bb, the same notes as the Eb major scale. The Cm chord is built from its 1st, 3rd and 5th degrees.
